Chelsea target Josko Gvardiol has had a significant influence at RB Leipzig and is being pursued by bigger clubs, but for the time being, he is staying put and has revealed reason why.

On Thursday, Josko Gvardiol received a contract extension from RB Leipzig and said he had never intended to leave.

This week, Gvardiol was heavily linked to Chelsea, who were reportedly looking to pay €90 million (£77 million) for the defender.

According to a previous report from Fabrizio, Chelsea and RB Leipzig are in advanced negotiations for the transfer of Joko Gvardiol. However, if Gvardiol remained at RB Leipzig, the transfer would not be finalized until June 2023, when he would join Chelsea.

Fabrizio said that negotiations were continuing on the club side and that an official offering submitted on Wednesday was around €90m.

Since that plan did not work out, the 20-year-old Croatia international star has renewed his contract with RB Leipzig by one year, making it last until 2027.

After an agreement was reached in September of last year, the Chelsea target relocated to Leipzig in July.

Last season, Gvardiol was one of just four defenders in the Bundesliga to produce at least 50 interceptions, 200 recoveries, and not make any mistakes that resulted in goals.

On revealing why he decided to extend his contract, the former Dinamo Zagreb star said;

“I really enjoy being here and I wanted to stay here. We have a lot of work to do and a lot to achieve here. We have a good team and we’re ready. We’re in the Champions League and won the DFB-Pokal last season. We want to compete for trophies once again.”

He added;

“I’m grateful to the club for counting on me and planning with me long-term.”
