Newcastle United used the January transfer window to strengthen their squad in order to avoid relegation to the Championship, which would end all of the excitement in the Premier League.
Eddie Howe’s side, who are currently 18th in the league table with just 15 points and one point behind Norwich City, have acquired five new players to help them avoid relegation.
Newcastle United spent more money than any other Premier League club in January, the first one of the new ownership.
Newcastle United’s January Transfer Signings are listed below.
Kieran Trippier from AtlΓ©tico Madrid – $17M
Trippier agreed to a two-and-a-half-year deal with the possibility of a third year after easy and amicable talks between Newcastle and Atletico Madrid.
The England international was the first player signed by Newcastle’s new Saudi owners.
Trippier stated that he is up for the job and that he will do everything in his power to keep Newcastle United in the Premier League.
Chris Wood from Burnley – $33M
Following the acquisition of Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid, Wood became Newcastle’s second January transfer signing.
The 30-year-old New Zealand forward agreed a contract at St James’ Park until the end of the 2023-24 season.
After Callum Wilson’s calf injury put him out for eight weeks, Magpies manager Eddie Howe sought forward reinforcements.
Bruno GuimarΓ£es from Lyon – $46M
Newcastle struck a Β£33.3 million deal with Lyon, plus roughly Β£6.5 million in add-ons, to make the midfielder their third January recruit, following the additions of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

Dan Burn from Brighton – $17M
Dan Burn joined Newcastle from Brighton on two and-a-half-year contract with a total fee of β¬15m on deadline day.
Matt Targett from Aston Villa – LOAN
Matt Targett from Aston Villa was the final addition to Newcastle’s January transfer window.
The 26-year-old left-back, on the other hand, was Newcastle’s fourth January signing, on loan until the end of the season.
Targett told the club’s website:
“I’m delighted to be here. I can’t wait to get going and meet all the fans and hopefully we can have a successful end to the season.β
With this army of players, Newcastle’s owners will undoubtedly want Eddie Howe and his boy to make no excuses for failing to avoid relegation.
In the future we'll sign loads of top players but we'll never forget Bruno Guimaraes and Trippier taking the leap of faith whilst we are at serious risk of relegation. They'll be club legends and captains one day, that I'm sure of #nufc
