Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has expressed his disappointment following the Super Eagles’ heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast in the 2023 AFCON final but vowed to bounce back stronger.
Despite an impressive run that saw them remain unbeaten through to the final of the tournament, the Super Eagles ultimately fell short against the Ivorians, Footballrover reports.
Nigeria’s goal came from William Toost-Ekong, while Ivory Coast’s goals came from Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller in the second half.
However, while reflecting on the outcome of the game, the Fulham defender, who played a crucial role in the defence for the Eagles, acknowledged the gut-wrenching defeat but emphasised the team’s collective spirit and commitment.
“Gutted! We gave everything out there and really wanted to bring it home for Nigeria,” Bassey wrote on his X page (formerly Twitter).
His message, however, went beyond just lamenting.
Bassey also expressed his gratitude for the immense support the team received throughout the tournament, acknowledging the “amazing journey” shared with a “special group.”
This statement highlights the strong team spirit that fueled Nigeria’s run to the final.
Looking ahead, Bassey’s words hit home with huge determination.
“We’ll be back,” he declared, echoing the resilience that has become a hallmark of the Super Eagles.
Bassey’s concluding message reinforced both faith and unity: “We win together and lose together. Thank you, God bless.”
