Sad news coming from Benue Queens camp after their journey back from their NWFL Matchday 5 encounter against Adamawa Queens took a dangerous turn as their team bus was violently attacked outside Pantami Stadium in Gombe State.
The shocking incident, allegedly carried out by hoodlums linked to Adamawa Queens, left players and officials in fear for their lives, Footballrover reports.
Violent attack on Benue Queens after heated NWFL clash
Moments after the final whistle in their away fixture against Adamawa ladies, Benue Queens’ team bus came under siege from a mob reportedly affiliated with the home side.
According to the club, stones were hurled at their vehicle, shattering the back glass and sending shards flying.
Footballrover undertsands that one player narrowly avoided injury as broken glass struck her forehead.
Benue Queens described the attack as a “sponsored” assault, claiming the mob targeted them for protesting what they believed was unfair officiating during the match.
The assailants allegedly warned them that they were “lucky” only stones were used.
The situation escalated when the mob attempted to physically attack players and officials, forcing the team to flee to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Pantami for safety.
Benue Queens demand justice from NWFL and NFF
Despite the presence of the match commissioner, Mrs. Vasty M. Vasu, and the officiating team, the Benue side lamented that their calls for intervention were ignored.
The officials reportedly drove away without addressing the situation, leaving the team to fend for themselves.
In a strongly worded statement, Benue ladies urged the Gombe State Government, the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to investigate the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The club emphasised the need for stricter security measures to protect players and officials traveling for league matches.
“We cannot ignore this act of brutality. An injury to one club today might lead to an injury to the entire football community in Nigeria tomorrow,” the statement read.
