Bayelsa United has vehemently denied allegations of assaulting Shooting Stars goalkeeper Okemute Odah during their NPFL matchday 37 fixture.
The Yenagoa-based team defeated Shooting Stars 2-1, with John Bassey scoring a brace to secure the win, Footballrover reports.
In a statement, Bayelsa United described Shooting Stars as bad losers, stating that the accusations were orchestrated to tarnish their reputation.
The club emphasised their commitment to peaceful conduct, citing their fans’ civilised behaviour throughout the season.
The statement highlighted that Bayelsa United provides security and stewards in the stadium, making it impossible for a fan to assault a player on the pitch.
The club also pointed out that Shooting Stars’ goalkeeper continued playing after the alleged incident, contradicting claims of assault.
Bayelsa United accused Shooting Stars of attempting to abandon the game, citing security reasons, and called on coach Gbenga Ogunbote to apologise for his unprofessional post-match interview.
Part of the statement reads:
“Ordinarily, we won’t have given listening ears to attention-seeking publications from falsehood merchants and those who are just after pecuniary benefits to tarnish the image of Bayelsa United fans, who are known for peaceful conduct all over the world.”
Footballrover understands that the club remains focused on their final league game against Bendel Insurance and will not be distracted by false allegations.
