Daniel Aiyenugba, son of former Super Eagles goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba, on Saturday became the youngest player to be awarded the Optimus Bank Man of the Match at the Value Jet Cup.
The young Beyond Limits Goalkeeper put on a dazzling display during the cup clash against 2022 NPFL champions, Rivers United, at the Ikenne Stadium in Ogun State.
Daniel’s brilliant display earned him this coveted accolade, marking the second time a goalkeeper has clinched the award during the ongoing tournament.
The first recipient was Darlingtin Ovunda from Shooting Stars in the opening games.
Performance of the Remo Star wonderkid in the Value Jet Cup 23 match against Rivers United was nothing short of exceptional.
He produced over eight crucial saves, ensuring his team remained in contention throughout the game.
Despite Rivers United’s relentless onslaught, Daniel’s goalkeeping heroics thwarted six shots on target, leaving the Pride of Rivers frustrated.
Securing a clean sheet against the former champions, who lined up a couple of new recruits also shows Daniel has a huge potential and a bright future in the sport.
As a reward for his stellar performance, Daniel pocketed the sum of N100k, an acknowledgment of his outstanding contribution to his team’s success.
The young goalkeeper’s remarkable achievement also highlights the rich footballing legacy of his father, Dele Aiyenugba, who had a stunning goalkeeping career spanning 25 years and also featuring in the Value Jet Cup competition.
Dele’s illustrious career includes achievements such as winning two CAF Champions League titles, two CAF Super Cups, one FA Cup title, and four NPFL titles while playing for Enyimba.
He later took his career to Israel, amassing over 400 appearances for various clubs before returning to Nigeria to join NPFL side Kwara United, where he currently plies his trade.
For Dele, his son’s success represents a new chapter in their family’s footballing journey, as he takes on the task of nurturing Daniel’s talent and helping him surpass his own achievements.
The torch has been passed, and Daniel Aiyenugba’s journey is poised to take huge turn.
