Ethan Nwaneri made headlines recently, this time for becoming Arsenal’s second-youngest Premier League goalscorer during the Gunners’ emphatic 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
But while the 17-year-old has continued to please Arsenal fans, Mikel Arteta has issued a word of caution, urging the rising star to keep his focus amid mounting expectations, Footballrover reports.
Nwaneri’s goal against Forest came in the dying minutes of the match, a sharp left-footed finish to cap off Raheem Sterling’s pinpoint cross.
Despite being on the pitch for less than ten minutes, the youngster left a significant mark, exhibiting confidence, creativity, and exceptional movement.
Nwaneri’s phenomenal rise: A cautious approach
His strike reignited Arsenal’s title challenge after a rocky spell. It also marked yet another record-breaking moment for Ethan, who first made history in September 2022 as the youngest player to feature in the Premier League at just 15 years and 181 days old.
Earlier this month, the teenager impressed with a standout performance against Preston North End in the EFL Cup and earned half an hour of game time against Newcastle.
Now, with his first Premier League goal in the bag, Nwaneri is living up to the promise that has seen him heralded as one of the brightest young talents in English football.
However, Arteta remains cautious. The Arsenal boss emphasised the importance of managing the hype surrounding the youngster, ensuring the he remains grounded while continuing his development.
Arteta suggests his focus should remain on playing football and shutting out the noise.
“Something I cannot do myself; I cannot manage expectations,” Arteta said when asked about Nwaneri’s development. “I will try to educate him, raise him, and give him the pathway that we believe is the best. His family, his agent, his friends—they will be very important as well. Don’t listen too much to the noise; focus on what he does, which is to play football, and he loves every minute of it. Good things will happen to him for sure.”
With a combination of talent, hard work, and the right guidance, the Arsenal boss believes the future is bright for the young star.
