Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze delivered strong statements ahead of Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, with both Super Eagles stars scoring in Fulham’s dramatic 5–4 defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League.
Iwobi returned to the scoresheet with a composed second-half finish at Craven Cottage, Footballrover reports.
Alex Iwobi’s goal highlights Fulham’s fight in Premier League clash
The Fulham midfielder grabbed his team’s second goal of the night, raising his season tally to four goal contributions in 14 appearances, including two assists.
The strike was Iwobi’s first since September 20, when he opened the scoring in Fulham’s 3–1 win over Brentford.
His latest goal ended a 13-match drought across club and country, covering nine games for Fulham and four for Nigeria.
Although his effort came with Fulham trailing 5–1, it sparked a late push that fired up the home crowd.
Chukwueze brace transforms momentum for Fulham
Samuel Chukwueze made a superb impact after coming on for Sasa Lukic at halftime.
The forward burst into life with a rapid brace, scoring twice in five minutes to drag the scoreline back to 5–4 and shift the momentum dramatically.
The AC Milan loanee now has five goal contributions this season—two goals and three assists in six appearances.
His recent run of form includes two assists and two goals in his last three matches, making him one of Fulham’s most dangerous players heading into a crucial period.
Manchester City started the match strongly and raced into a comfortable lead, with Erling Haaland scoring his 100th Premier League goal after striking the post earlier.
Tijjani Reijnders and Phil Foden added further goals before halftime, while Emile Smith Rowe kept Fulham in the contest with a well-placed header.
City stretched their advantage to 5–1 early in the second half as Foden completed his brace and Jérémy Doku’s effort deflected into the net.
But Fulham refused to back down. Iwobi’s clinical finish sparked hope, and Samuel Chukwueze’s quick-fire double ignited real belief inside Craven Cottage.
Fulham almost snatched a dramatic equaliser, but Josh King’s late attempt was cleared off the line.
Despite the defeat, the attacking performances of Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze offered a major boost for Nigeria ahead of their AFCON preparations.
