Ipswich Town’s boss Kieran McKenna has expressed his disappointment following a frustrating Premier League game at Portman Road on Saturday night, lamenting how two defensive errors pushed them to a 2-1 defeat to Southampton.
The loss, sealed by Nigerian duo Paul Onuachu and Joe Aribo, dealt a significant blow to Ipswich’s campaign while boosting Southampton’s survival hopes, Footballrover reports.
Onuachu and Aribo punish Ipswich’s costly mistakes
Joe Aribo broke the deadlock in the 21st minute with a straightforward shot that Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric failed to handle.
The equaliser from Liam Delap briefly lifted Ipswich’s spirits, but their hopes were dashed when Paul Onuachu reacted quickest to a rebound after Muric once again spilt a low drive from Kamaldeen Sulemana.
Southampton’s victory provided a much-needed boost as they battle relegation, cutting the gap to Ipswich to seven points.
The Saints remain at the bottom of the Premier League with nine points but will take confidence from their spirited performance.
Ipswich boss blames defensive errors for defeat
In his post-match press conference, McKenna did not hold back in his criticism, describing both goals as preventable.
He pointed out that the first goal stemmed from a goal kick, marking Southampton’s first real threat inside Ipswich’s box.
Muric’s failure to make a routine save, followed by another error for the second goal, left the Ipswich boss visibly frustrated.
“Yeah, they were. The first goal is a goal kick, and it’s probably the first time that they entered our box, and it should be saved as well. Two poor goals,” the Ipswich boss said, as quoted by the BBC.
Meanwhile, Aribo and Onuachu continue to play important parts in Southampton’s fight for survival under Ivan Jurić.
Since joining from Genk, Onuachu has netted twice despite struggling for form, while Aribo has contributed three goals in 23 league appearances.
As both players regain confidence, Southampton will be hoping to build on this victory in their push for safety.
