Ademola Lookman endured a tough evening as Atalanta suffered a 2-0 defeat to Inter Milan, marking their third loss to the Serie A leaders this season without finding the net.
The Nigerian forward played 83 minutes but couldn’t spark a comeback as Atalanta’s struggles at home persisted, Footballrover reports.
With this result, Atalanta remain in third place on 58 points, trailing Inter by six points.
The match, featuring two of Serie A’s highest-scoring sides, delivered early excitement, but it ultimately ended in disappointment for Lookman’s team.
Atalanta’s attack falters as Inter seize control
The game started with both teams looking to make a statement. Marcus Thuram almost gave Inter the lead inside seven minutes, but his effort clipped the inside of the post and bounced out.
Atalanta responded moments later, with Mario Pasalic’s header forcing a brilliant save from Yann Sommer.
As the match progressed, defensive discipline took over. Ademola Lookman attempted to break the deadlock before halftime but failed to hit the target.
However, Inter finally found a breakthrough in the 54th minute, when Carlos Augusto met Hakan Calhanoglu’s pinpoint corner to head home.
Inter continued to apply pressure, and although Lautaro Martinez had a goal disallowed for a foul in the build-up, Atalanta’s problems deepened.
Ederson’s late red card left them a man down, and Martinez sealed the victory in the 86th minute, ending Inter’s four-match winless streak away from home.
Ademola Lookman turns focus to Super Eagles after tough loss
Atalanta’s defeat to Inter means they are still searching for their first home Serie A win of 2025. The loss also ended their hopes of cutting Inter’s lead at the top.
Now, Ademola Lookman must shift his focus to international duty, as he joins his Super Eagles teammates in Kigali ahead of crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
Despite this disappointing result, Lookman will be eager to make a bigger impact for Nigeria on the road to the World Cup.
