Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman displayed true sportsmanship by congratulating champions Ivory Coast and their star striker Sébastien Haller following the conclusion of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
While acknowledging the Super Eagles’ shortcomings in the final, Lookman took to social media to express his admiration for the tournament winners.
“We fell short, but we gave everything, and we will be back. Thank you for all the love and support. I am always grateful for the fans. Congratulations to the hosts and Haller; you’re an inspiration to all. God bless Naija,” he tweeted.
Recall Footballrover reported that Ivory Coast came from a goal down to hand Nigeria a 2-1 defeat in the AFCON final.
29-year-old Haller, playing on home soil, was instrumental in Ivory Coast’s success, scoring in the final alongside Franck Kessie.
Lookman himself enjoyed a stellar tournament, netting three goals and earning a place in the official AFCON squad.
While the Super Eagles fell short this time, their hunger and determination, coupled with the inspiration drawn from their rivals, bode well for future tournaments.
Despite his impressive performance, Lookman will miss Atalanta’s upcoming Serie A clash against Sassuolo due to injury.
He recently rejoined his club as they strive for European qualification in the Italian League.
