Luton Town’s Nigerian-descent striker, Elijah Adebayo, has revealed his aspirations to represent the Nigerian national team in an interview with the Times in the UK.

The 26-year-old has finally opened up, sending a love note to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in the wake of Valentine’s Day, Footballrover reports.

Adebayo, who has been in prolific form this season with nine goals in 23 Premier League matches, highlighted his mother’s pride as a key motivator for his desire to play for Nigeria.

“I would like to represent Nigeria,” Adebayo said, just to make his mother proud, claiming that it would make her happy. He revealed that they had spoken about it before.

While acknowledging the possibility of representing England as well, Adebayo emphasised his mother’s preference for seeing him play for Nigeria.

“It would be a case of whichever comes first. My mom would be proud if I played for Nigeria or England, but Nigeria especially,” the forward said. 

He further revealed that both he and his mother actively supported Nigeria during the recent AFCON final against Ivory Coast.

Adebayo’s impressive performances for Luton Town have not gone unnoticed, and his recent hat-trick against Brighton marked a significant milestone for the club.

With his talent and determination, Adebayo could potentially find himself in the Nigerian squad in the near future, fulfilling his dream of representing his mother’s homeland on the international stage.

Recall that Elijah Adebayo is not the first Premier League player to indicate interest in playing for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Dominic Solanke has long indicated interest and will finally consider donning the green and white colours of the Super Eagles if he does not get picked to feature for England in Euro 2024.
