Super Eagles Midfield Crisis Deepens as Dele-Bashiru and Onyedika Face Injuries

Eric Chelle faces Super Eagles midfield crisis ahead of qualifiers

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been hit by fresh injury worries in midfield just weeks before their crucial FIFA World Cup qualifiers, raising concerns over their depth and readiness for the decisive fixtures.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru injury sidelines Super Eagles midfielder

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, one of the standout performers under coach Eric Chelle in recent months, has been ruled out for at least a month after suffering a lesion to the femoral biceps in his right leg while playing for Lazio.

The 24-year-old midfielder’s absence is a huge blow for Nigeria’s engine room.

Nottingham Forest’s versatile defender Ola Aina is also unavailable after undergoing hamstring surgery that will keep him sidelined until December.

Adding to Chelle’s worries, Raphael Onyedika, a key figure in Club Brugge’s midfield, was forced off just 16 minutes into their chaotic 5-5 draw against KVC Westerlo in the Belgian Pro League last weekend.

The 24-year-old defensive midfielder’s departure coincided with Brugge’s collapse, conceding four goals after his exit—a stark reminder of his stabilising influence.

Onyedika has been ever-present for Nicky Hayen’s side this season and recently scored in Brugge’s 4-1 UEFA Champions League victory over AS Monaco, which shows his importance at both club and international levels.

Brugge coach Nicky Hayen reflected on the injury setbacks with concern.

He said they would assess the situation in the coming days and expressed hope that it will not be too serious. Hayen added that the player provides stability and defensive balance to his team.

With Dele-Bashiru ruled out and Onyedika’s return date uncertain, Chelle faces a major selection headache.

The timing could hardly be worse as Nigeria prepares for the final round of World Cup qualifiers, and Chelle may be forced to reshuffle his attacking options too.

Glimmers of Hope Amid the Injury Cloud

There is some relief for the Super Eagles as Hull City defender Semi Ajayi nears full fitness, while talisman Victor Osimhen is back in action for Galatasaray after recovering from the ankle injury he sustained in Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Rwanda.

Beyond the qualifiers, the Super Eagles are also scheduled to travel to the United States for two international friendlies in November—facing Venezuela on November 15 and Colombia on November 19—fixtures that could provide Chelle with an opportunity to test new midfield options.

As things stand, Nigeria’s hopes of a smooth run to the World Cup will depend heavily on the recovery of Dele-Bashiru and Onyedika, which is likely not possible.
