Remo Stars coach Daniel Ogunmodede has taken an unexpected approach following his team’s 2-1 loss to Enugu Rangers in Sunday’s NPFL matchday 24 clash at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.
Instead of focusing on the disappointment of ending an eight-match unbeaten streak, Ogunmodede praised the quality of the game, explaining that luck simply wasn’t on his side.
But was this a sign of a bigger story unfolding in the NPFL?
Remo Stars coach reflects on the thrilling encounter with Enugu Rangers
Despite the Sky Blue Stars’ defeat to Rangers, Ogunmodede expressed satisfaction with the spectacle both teams produced.
Isaac Saviour’s first-half free kick gave the Flying Antelopes the lead, and Kingsley Maduforo doubled their advantage just after the break.
Though Sikiru Alimi’s late goal brought some hope for the league leaders, it wasn’t enough to avoid the loss.
“It was a good game, and I’m happy we were able to give the spectators a good reason to come and watch the match,” Ogunmodede said.
He went on to highlight how both teams showed courage, especially Rangers, the defending champions.
“Rangers had to fight for their lives. They are the current champions, and you can imagine what it takes or looks like to dethrone a champion. You need to do it in the most difficult way, so I salute their courage,” the coach said.
Enugu Rangers prove a tough challenge for Remo Stars coach
Ogunmodede acknowledged that while his team had several chances to score, they couldn’t capitalise on them.
In contrast, the Coal City side made the most of their opportunities.
Ogunmodede pointed out that just as Remo Stars were finding their rhythm in the second half, Rangers secured their second goal, which strengthened their confidence and helped them win the match.
However, the Remo Stars coach wasn’t overly concerned about his team’s unbeaten run coming to an end.
“I went into the dressing room and checked the league table, noting that Remo Stars were still eight points clear at the top,” Ogunmodede remarked.
For him, maintaining the top spot was far more important than the unbeaten streak.
Ogunmodede further emphasised that while Rangers had enjoyed an unbeaten stretch earlier in the season, they were still in fourth place, reinforcing his belief that standings matter more than streaks in the league.
In the end, the defeat at Enugu Rangers may have been a tough pill to swallow, but Remo Stars remain firmly in control of the NPFL title race.
