Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick has given a glowing review of Kelechi Iheanacho, claiming that the Super Eagles star is desperate to feature for his new side while praising his “fantastic personality.”
After a frustrating spell in Spain, could this be the moment Iheanacho reclaims his form in England?
Middlesbrough’s new attacking weapon: Iheanacho’s hunger to shine
Iheanacho joined Middlesbrough on loan from Spanish side Sevilla on transfer deadline day, eager for a fresh start after a difficult six-month stint in La Liga, footballrover reports.
The 28-year-old Nigerian international failed to find the net in nine La Liga appearances for Sevilla, struggling to make an impact since arriving on a free transfer last summer.
Now, under Carrick’s guidance, the former Premier League striker is determined to make his mark in the Championship.
According to the Middlesbrough manager, Kelechi Iheanacho brings a wealth of experience and pedigree, having been a well-known player for a long time.
Carrick recalled that Iheanacho featured against Middlesbrough at the Riverside last season, where, despite his team’s defeat, he demonstrated his quality.
The Middlesbrough boss emphasised that Iheanacho is eager to hit the ground running, claiming that his presence gives the team strong attacking options.
“He’s desperate to play, and he has a fantastic personality. Since arriving, he’s been great in training and has settled in well with the squad,” Carrick said via the club’s official website.
Carrick, however, admitted that while not everyone can play at the same time, the squad’s depth could be an advantage.
A fresh start: Iheanacho’s debut on the horizon?
Middlesbrough travel to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United on Wednesday (today), and fans will be eager to see if Iheanacho gets his much-anticipated debut.
The Nigerian forward was officially introduced to the club’s fans at the Riverside on February 3 before Middlesbrough’s clash with Sunderland.
A proven goal scorer with a history of shining in English football, Iheanacho has previously credited legends like Jamie Vardy, Yaya Touré, and John Mikel Obi for shaping his career.
Now, with renewed confidence and a point to prove, he will be hoping to make an immediate impact for his new club.
