In a resounding response to CAF’s recent verdict on the Libya incident, Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has expressed his approval of the decision, which awarded Nigeria a 3-0 victory by default and imposed a $50,000 fine on Libya.
The Nigerian team had been diverted mid-flight, left stranded 300 kilometers from their original destination, with Captain Troost-Ekong leading his squad to refuse playing under such hostile conditions, Footballrover reports.
The Al-Kholood star took to social media to voice his relief and gratitude for the outcome, stating,
“Justice: CAF awards three points and three goals to Nigeria. Libya fined $50,000. Plane was diverted 300km from scheduled airport even when the pilot told them he was low on fuel. One step closer to our target AFCON 2025.”
This incident began when the Super Eagles’ flight was abruptly redirected. Upon arrival, they found themselves isolated, lacking essential amenities and communication, in what the captain later described as “unacceptable conditions.”
The defender’s leadership was instrumental in the players’ decision not to participate until their safety could be guaranteed.
Troost-Ekong stands firm on sportsmanship
Throughout the ordeal, Troost-Ekong reiterated his commitment to fair play and respect for opponents, emphasising that the Super Eagles would never impose similar treatment on visiting teams.
CAF’s ruling not only validated the Nigerian team’s concerns but also reinforced the governing body’s zero-tolerance stance on issues compromising player safety.
The decision effectively closes the chapter on a challenging moment for the Super Eagles, as they now set their sights on AFCON 2025 with renewed determination.
With the African governing body’s support, William and the Super Eagles can now move forward, their focus solely on achieving their goals and representing Nigeria with pride on the continental stage.
