Everton coach Sean Dyche recently shared the surprising reason behind his decision to let go of Alex Iwobi, a player he described as an “excellent servant” for the club.
Dyche admitted it wasn’t an easy choice to let Iwobi move from Everton to Fulham, but he felt the circumstances left him with little option, Footballrover reports.
Alex joined Fulham in September 2023, closing a four-year chapter at Everton.
The Nigeria international originally arrived from Arsenal in 2019 for a substantial fee of £28 million, where he initially faced challenges.
However, he soon found his stride, becoming instrumental in the Toffees’ survival battles over the past two seasons.
His contributions didn’t go unnoticed, as he notched eight assists and was awarded the Players’ Player of the Season.
Alex Iwobi’s Journey: From Goodison Park to Craven Cottage
Reflecting on Iwobi’s departure, Dyche acknowledged the Nigerian star’s impressive evolution at Everton.
Iwobi’s final year at Goodison Park saw him excel in both midfield and attack, bringing versatility that made him invaluable.
But as the club weighed its financial options, letting Iwobi go for £22 million presented itself as a sound business move.
Today, as Iwobi returns to face Everton with Fulham, the Merseyside fans will see their former hero in new colours.
Dyche, however, has no regrets, emphasising that the sale made financial sense.
The Everton boss noted,
“It was a very good deal for the club. I thought he was an excellent servant certainly in my time here; I enjoyed having him around the place,” the Everton boss was quoted by Liverpool World.
”He was a joy to work with, a very good player in my opinion. Not one I wanted to lose but needed to at that time. It was a good fee for a good player.”
The Premier League showdown promises added tension, with Alex Iwobi set to take on his old teammates and perhaps show the Everton coach exactly what they’re missing.
