Troost-Ekong signals Super Eagles' Libya exit: 'Our plane is fueling'

In a statement on his X page, Troost-Ekong revealed that the team’s plane is being fuelled, signalling their imminent departure from the North African country, Footballrover reports.

Power of social media. Apparently our plane is being fueled as we speak, and we should be leaving to Nigeria shortly. Thanks for everyone’s support. I reiterate: We would never treat a guest nation for a game in this way,” he wrote.

The Super Eagles had been stranded at the airport in Libya for over 12 hours due to a diversion during their descent.

The Libyan government unexpectedly rescinded their approved landing in Benghazi without explanation, leaving the team trapped in an abandoned airport.

The situation escalated as airport gates were locked, cutting off communication, food, and water for the players and staff.

Troost-Ekong described the harrowing experience in a previous post, sharing that attempts to find nearby accommodations were thwarted by government restrictions.

While their pilot and his crew could rest, no Nigerian team members were allowed entry into the hotels. As a result, the team resorted to sleeping on the parked plane.

In light of these distressing events, Troost-Ekong called for intervention from the Nigerian government, urging them to assist the team in their rescue.

He emphasised that, despite the challenges, they would not participate in the match under such conditions.

We will not accept to travel anywhere by road here; even with security, it’s not safe,” he stated, making clear their position regarding the treatment of visiting teams.

The captain reiterated his commitment to sportsmanship and respect for opponents, asserting that the Super Eagles would never treat a guest nation in such a manner.

Mistakes happen; delays happen. But never on purpose,” he remarked, reflecting on the troubling circumstances the team has endured.
