Barnsley have strengthened their midfield with the signing of Nigerian international Kelechi Nwakali from Portuguese side GD Chaves.
The League One club has secured the services of the 26-year-old on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee, Footballrover reports.
In his first interview as a Barnsley player, Nwakali revealed the reasons behind his decision to join the Reds.
He revealed that he had a deep conversation with Mladen Sormaz, the sporting director, and head coach Darrell earlier in the summer.
Right after the meeting, he knew it was an exciting opportunity for him and had to move.
He also added that he knew the move to the English third-tier side could bring a lot to the team.
“I’m delighted to be joining Barnsley,” he said.
The former Arsenal midfielder is eager to make his mark in English football once again.
Nwakali admitted that he needs to prove a point again in his career once more and that, coming to Barnsley, it was time to prove himself to the world and have an impact on the club.
Barnsley’s Sporting Director, Mladen Sormaz, is excited about the signing.
“There is no doubt that Kelechi is a really talented player who can offer Darrell something different,” he said.
Mladen Sormaz said that they knew the player wanted to return to England, and that gave them an opportunity to bring him to Oakwell.
Sormaz added that they believed the player’s experience in some of Europe’s top leagues would benefit them over the coming years.
He also mentioned that the player had a shortened pre-season and they would ease him into first-team action over the coming weeks.
