AFCON 2023: Osimhen Hails Defenders, Nwabali After Cameroon Win, Vows for Improvement

Nigerian super star Victor Osimhen has lauded the Super Eagles defence and goalkeeper for their pivotal role in securing a 2-0 victory against Cameroon in the AFCON 2023 knockout stage on Saturday.

The likes of Calvin Bassey, William Troost-Ekong, Semi Ajayi, Ola Aina, and Zaidu Sanusi put in a commanding performance, inspiring Nigeria to their hard-fought win over the Indomitable Lions, Footballrover reports.

These five players were the bedrock of Nigeria’s success, keeping Cameroon at bay throughout the match.

Ademola Lookman’s brace propelled Jose Peseiro’s men into the AFCON quarterfinals, where they will face Angola.

Osimhen Praises Defenders and Goalkeeper

In his post-match interview, Osimhen commended the defenders’ focus and dedication throughout the tournament.

He also highlighted the contribution of goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, emphasising their collective desire to maintain their winning momentum.

I want to give kudos to my defenders. They have been focused since the start of this competition. We also have a good goalkeeper [Nwabali]. We want to keep this momentum going,” he said.

Osimhen’s Leadership and Goal-Scoring Prowess

Osimhen, the reigning African Footballer of the Year, has been a key figure for the Super Eagles in AFCON 2023, giving Cameroon defenders a tough time.

He has contributed a goal and an assist so far and will be leading his team’s charge against Angola in the quarterfinals.

Nigeria’s Road to AFCON Glory
