Boniface encountered an adductor injury during Nigeria’s preparation for the 2023 AFCON in Abu Dhabi, UAE, which forced him to miss both the tournament and several months of football action, Footballrover reports.

Following surgery, the 23-year-old spent approximately three months on the sidelines, eagerly awaiting his return to the pitch.

Making his comeback for Bayer Leverkusen in their recent DFB Pokal triumph against Fortuna Dusseldorf, Boniface expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play again after his prolonged absence.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Boniface opened up about the difficulties he faced during his time away from the game, emphasising the challenges of being sidelined while his team needed him the most.

Currently, Boniface and his teammates are enjoying an impressive unbeaten streak of 40 games, positioning them favorably for a treble this season.

They lead the Bundesliga table by 13 points, are finalists in the DFB Pokal, and are set to face West Ham United in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League.
