In what could have been a dream start, Umeh Emmanuel delivered a standout performance for FC Zurich in their Swiss League opener—but it all ended in bitter heartbreak in front of their home fans.
The young Nigerian forward registered two brilliant assists to put Zurich ahead, only to watch helplessly as his team surrendered a 2-0 lead and fell 2-3 to Sion, Footballrover reports.
Umeh Emmanuel Lights Up the Swiss League Opener
The 20-year-old was in red-hot form at the Letzigrund Stadium. From the start, Emmanuel showed confidence and creativity in his role, dictating attacking play for Zurich.
His first contribution came in the 27th minute when he linked up with Steven Zuber, who finished calmly to give Zurich a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Just ten minutes after the break, Emmanuel was at it again. This time, he played a slick one with Damienus Reverson to double the advantage, sparking celebration among the home fans.
His quick thinking and vision set the pace for Zurich’s attack, making him the standout performer of the night.
While Emmanuel had his moments, his compatriot, 19-year-old German-born defender Kelechi Daniel Ihendu, made his debut for the club.
Late Collapse Overshadows Umeh’s Brilliance
Unfortunately for FC Zurich, the game took a dark turn after Emmanuel left the pitch in the 82nd minute.
Having done his part with two assists, he was substituted for Nvendo Ferrier. That change marked the beginning of the unravelling.
Just minutes later, Sion pulled one back through Rilind Nivokazi.
Then, in dramatic stoppage time, super sub Josias Lukembila scored twice to turn the match on its head and hand Zurich a disappointing home defeat.
It was a crushing result for the Zurich squad, especially for Umeh Emmanuel, whose early efforts deserved more than a loss.
The team had complete control for much of the match, but late-game lapses cost them valuable points on opening day.
