Super Falcons midfielder Toni Payne delivered another sharp performance as her early assist helped Everton seal a stunning 1-0 win over Chelsea in their Women’s Super League clash on Sunday.
The Nigerian star set the tone just 12 minutes into the match, breaking down the right flank with pace before firing a low cross into the box, Footballrover reports.
Toni Payne Assist Highlights Everton’s Fast Start
The ball found Honoka Hayashi at the back post, and the midfielder calmly slotted home to give Everton the early lead.
The assist was Payne’s second of the WSL season and her fourth goal contribution across all competitions in 14 appearances.
Her first came in the narrow 2-1 loss to Manchester City, and she once again proved reliable in her fifth start of the campaign.
Chelsea’s Unbeaten Run Ends as Everton Hold Firm
Chelsea struggled to settle and were repeatedly frustrated by Everton’s organization.
Courtney Brosnan produced several key saves, while Ruby Mace anchored a disciplined defensive display.
Despite Chelsea’s improved second-half push — including the introduction of Sam Kerr — Everton stayed compact.
The hosts struck the woodwork in stoppage time and even had a goal-bound effort cleared off the line, but Everton held on to secure their first win in eight matches and hand Chelsea their first league defeat under Sonia Bompastor—ending the historic 585-day unbeaten streak.
Payne and her teammates became the first team to beat Chelsea in a Barclays WSL fixture since their city neighbours, Liverpool, did in May 2024.
