Super Falcons forward Ifeoma Onumonu delivered a brilliant brace on Saturday evening, but her outstanding performance was not enough to prevent Montpellier HSC Féminines from suffering a crushing 4-2 defeat at the hands of Paris FC.
Despite her best efforts, including goals in both halves, Montpellier came up short in a thrilling encounter, leaving Onumonu and her teammates devastated, Footballrover reports.
The Nigerian forward’s impressive brace marked her second consecutive goal-scoring performance in France’s Division 1 Féminine, bringing her tally to three goals for the season.
However, her brilliance was overshadowed by two late strikes from Paris FC, sealing Montpellier’s fate in this high-stakes battle.
With this loss, Montpellier’s hopes of climbing the league table were dashed, as they now sit in 7th place with only 10 points after seven matches.
Ifeoma Onumonu’s brilliant brace: A heartbreaking defeat in the end
Onumonu had been in excellent form coming into the match, having scored the opening goal in Montpellier’s dominant 7-0 victory over Guingamp in the previous round.
Riding high on the momentum from that impressive win, the 30-year-old striker looked to continue her goal-scoring streak.
But the match took an unexpected turn as Chiamaka Nnadozie and her Paris FC teammates, proved resilient and clinically capitalised on Montpellier’s defensive lapses.
The game began with a bang as Maelle Garbino gave Paris FC the lead just 11 minutes into the match.
However, Onumonu responded swiftly, finding the back of the net 15 minutes later to level the score. Montpellier’s joy was shortlived, though, as Kessya Bussy restored Paris FC’s lead before halftime.
The second half saw Onumonu shine again, doubling her tally to pull Montpellier level at 2-2. But Paris FC struck back with two quick goals from Julie Dufour, ultimately sealing a 4-2 victory.
This devastating loss left Montpellier with much to reflect on as they now prepare for their upcoming match against Nantes, hoping to bounce back and salvage their season.
With just three wins, three defeats, and one draw, the team faces an uphill battle in their quest to climb the Division 1 Féminine standings.
