Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong endured another difficult night in the Saudi Pro League as his own goal proved costly in Al Kholood’s 3–2 home defeat to Neom on Thursday evening.
It was a frustrating moment for the Nigerian defender at the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium, where he has become a key figure for Al Kholood this season, Footballrover reports.
Troost-Ekong’s Costly Own Goal Sinks Al Kholood Against Neom
Ekong attempted to intercept a dangerous pass in the 32nd minute, but his clearance took an awkward bounce, looping over his goalkeeper and into the net to hand Neom a 2–1 lead.
The hosts, who had started brightly, never fully recovered from that mistake. Despite a spirited late push, Al Kholood eventually fell 3–2 — their fourth defeat in seven league games, leaving them ninth on the table with nine points.
Troost-Ekong has now made seven league appearances this season, but Thursday’s setback adds another difficult chapter to his Saudi campaign.
Echoes of Bloemfontein as Troost-Ekong’s Luck Falters Again
For Troost-Ekong, the own goal felt like déjà vu. Back on September 9, during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa in Bloemfontein, he also turned the ball into his own net — gifting Bafana Bafana the lead before Calvin Bassey rescued a point for Nigeria with a powerful header in a 1–1 draw.
That result ultimately helped South Africa seal their World Cup ticket ahead of the Super Eagles, who missed automatic qualification and were forced into the CAF playoffs.
Now, with Al Kholood struggling for consistency in Saudi Arabia and Nigeria preparing for the decisive playoff clash against Gabon next month, Troost-Ekong will be eager to turn the page and rediscover his composure both at club and international level.
Even for a player of his experience, it’s a testing period — one that demands focus, leadership, and the mental strength that has long defined his career.
