Super Eagles stars Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi quickly shook off the heartbreak of Nigeria’s failed 2026 FIFA World Cup push to shine for Fulham on Saturday.
The Nigerian duo played key roles as the Cottagers battled hard before snatching a late 1-0 English Premier League victory over Leeds United at Craven Cottage, Footballrover reports.
Bassey and Iwobi Bounce Back in Premier League Clash
Bassey, who scored Nigeria’s equaliser in the 1-1 draw against South Africa last weekend, showed his resilience by bossing Fulham’s defence.
He had 100 touches of the ball, made 19 passes into the final third, five clearances, and seven recoveries.
His composure at the back helped Fulham stay in the game despite heavy Leeds pressure.
Iwobi, on the other hand, featured for 76 minutes before being replaced by Kevin.
The midfielder was lively with 37 touches and five key passes in the attacking third.
His link-up play gave Fulham moments of control before the late drama unfolded.
Super Eagles Stars Inspire Fulham’s First EPL Win
The decisive moment came in added time when Gabriel Gudmundsson’s unlucky header turned a Sasa Lukic corner into his own net.
That own goal sealed Fulham’s first Premier League win of the season.
Before that, Leeds had dominated, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Brenden Aaronson coming close, while Sean Longstaff struck the woodwork.
But Fulham held firm, with goalkeeper Bernd Leno making crucial stops until the late twist.
The win lifts Marco Silva’s side to 10th on the log, while Leeds dropped to 14th after a painful finish.
For Fulham, it was not just three points but a confidence boost, powered by the determination of Super Eagles players Bassey and Iwobi.
