The Super Eagles of Nigeria have turned the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 into a remarkable showpiece and statement tournament.
Five matches in, Nigeria sit among the standout teams, combining attacking power with growing defensive control, Footballrover reports.
Super Eagles Rewrite History at AFCON 2025
From record-breaking wins to consistent individual brilliance, the Eagles’ campaign has shown depth, balance, and belief.
For the first time in their AFCON history, the Eagles have won their opening five matches at a single tournament.
They also became the first team at AFCON 2025 to score four goals in a match, proof of how solid their attacking unit is.
Nigeria are currently the highest-scoring side in the competition, with 14 goals from five matches.
That output reflects a team comfortable in possession, sharp in transition, and ruthless in front of goal.
AFCON 2025 Numbers That Define Nigeria’s Dominance
The goals and assists have been well shared across the squad. Victor Osimhen has led the line with four goals and two assists, while Ademola Lookman has been equally influential, delivering three goals and four assists.
Akor Adams has chipped in with two goals and two assists, while goal contributions have come from Raphael Onyedika (two goals), Alex Iwobi (two assists), Samuel Chukwueze (two assists), Fisayo Dele-Bashiru (one assist), and Bruno Onyemaechi (one assist).
Other players who have also made their mark with goals include Semi Ajayi, Wilfred Ndidi, and Paul Onuachu, showing Nigeria’s threat from set pieces.
Individual excellence has also been rewarded. The Super Eagles have claimed the Man of the Match award in all five games so far.
Semi Ajayi, Lookman (twice), Onyedika, and Osimhen have all taken turns in the spotlight.
Beyond goals, Nigeria’s defensive shape has improved. After conceding four times in the group stage, the Eagles have now kept consecutive clean sheets in the knockout rounds, a key factor in their deep run at AFCON 2025.
Match-by-match path so far
Nigeria’s journey has tested them against different football cultures across the continent.
Group Stage:
Nigeria 2–1 Tanzania
Nigeria 3–2 Tunisia
Nigeria 3–1 Uganda
Knockout Stage:
Nigeria 4–0 Mozambique
Quarter-final:
Nigeria 2–0 Algeria
Each win has added confidence and clarity to the team’s identity.
Semi-final challenge ahead
The Super Eagles now face Morocco in the semi-final, their third opponent from Northern Africa at AFCON 2025. The Atlas Lions booked their place by defeating DR Congo in the quarter-finals.
The match will be played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Wednesday, January 14, with kickoff set for 21:00.
Head coach Eric Chelle has acknowledged the challenge, pointing to the pressure of playing the host nation while stressing that quality on the pitch will decide the outcome.
“Morocco is a strong team, and there’ll be pressure in front of the host country. The best team will win. I’m proud that we’ll face Morocco, and I hope it’ll be a good match, with the best team winning, Eric Chelle said.
As Nigeria prepare for this decisive test, their form suggests a team peaking at the right moment.
If the balance between attack and defence continues, the Super Eagles will remain strong contenders all the way to the final of AFCON 2025.
