Super Eagles defender Ryan Alebiosu registered an assist as Blackburn Rovers defeated Sheffield United on Wednesday night to guarantee their Championship survival.
Alebiosu set up the third goal as the visitors snatched a convincing 3-1 win over their hosts in a Round 44 clash at Bramall Lane, Footballrover reports.
Ryan Alebiosu shines as Blackburn take control early
It was the 24-year-old’s second assist in his last four outings and his fifth of the campaign; the defender also has one goal to his name in 40 appearances in the English second tier this season.
The Nigerian international helped his side snap a four-game winless run—consisting of three draws and a defeat—to return to winning ways at a crucial moment.
Blackburn successfully secured their safety with a commanding performance against Sheffield, overcoming a late surge to win the penultimate game of the season.
Knowing a victory would mathematically end any relegation fears, Rovers played with a serious urgency that caught the Blades off guard.
The first half belonged entirely to the visitors. Yuki Ohashi was the standout performer, opening the scoring in the 12th minute after rounding the keeper.
Ryoya Morishita doubled the lead by pouncing on a rebound, before Ohashi struck again just before the interval with a powerful header to make it 3-0.
Faced with a dismal display, Blades manager Chris Wilder made four tactical substitutions at halftime to spark a recovery.
The changes initially worked; Harrison Burrows clawed one back in the 57th minute, and Tom Cannon forced several saves from Rovers’ goalkeeper Balazs Toth as the home side piled on the pressure.
Championship survival confirmed for Blackburn after resilient display
However, the Blackburn defence remained resolute under the onslaught. By weathering the second-half storm, Rovers maintained their lead to move eight points clear of the relegation zone.
With their rivals unable to bridge the gap in the remaining fixtures, the result confirms Blackburn’s survival, while the Blades were left to reflect on a poor opening period that cost them the match.
As the hosts slipped to their fourth defeat in eight matches, Blackburn’s traveling fans were left to celebrate their side’s hard-fought safety.
