In a disappointing start to their 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign, Rivers United stumbled with a narrow defeat against Niger Tornadoes in Kaduna on Sunday evening, Footballrover reports.
The home team secured a crucial victory with a 6th-minute penalty converted by Bashir Usman after Rivers United was penalized for a handling error
Despite the early setback, Rivers United displayed determination and offensive prowess, with players like Deputy Echeta, Nyima Nwagua, Samuel Adom, Sadiq Abubakar, and Alex Oyowah posing a threat to the opponent.
The second half held a significant moment when a potential penalty was not awarded to Rivers United in the 67th minute, following a challenge in the box involving Sadiq Abubakar.
Abiodun Akande, the goalkeeper for Rivers United, made two remarkable saves later in the game to keep their hopes alive, but time ran out for the team.
This unfortunate defeat marked Rivers United’s first loss to Niger Tornadoes in five meetings.
Rivers United had previously demonstrated resilience and skill in their recent CAF Confederation’s Cup match against Etoile Filante but struggled on the road this time.
The team manager Stanley Eguma admitted that his team failed to live up to expectations in this match.
This defeat also signified Niger Tornadoes’ first victory against Rivers United in four years and their first home win against the Pride of Rivers in three league seasons.
Rivers United will now look to bounce back as they prepare to host Remo Stars at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Thursday, October 12, 2023, in a rescheduled Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday One fixture scheduled for a 4 pm kickoff.
