Rivers United on Wednesday afternoon won a crucial match against Plateau United during their Nigerian Professional Football League game.
The Stanley Eguma side thrashed their opponents 2-0 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium to secure all three points and extend their advantage at the top of the NPFL table.
Rivers United seized the lead 33 minutes into the game when Chijioke Akuneto stepped up and scored from the penalty spot. The forward scored his 13th goal of the season to give the home team a boost.
The hosts held on to the slim lead to the interval, and Izuchukwu Chimezie had a one-on-one opportunity with just Sochima Victor to beat nine minutes into the second half, but the goalkeeper stretched full length to deny him.
Before Rivers United increased their advantage 28 minutes later through Chijioke Akuneto, who doubled his match score when he reacted quickest to slot home from a goalmouth scramble.

With his 14th goal of the season, the forward handed the home team the win and all three points.
The Pride of Rivers are now 10 points clear at the top of the league table, and they will look to keep their winning streak going when they face Wikki Tourist of Bauchi next on Sunday.
