Rivers Angels are through to the quarterfinal stages of Federation Cup, following a 1-0 victory over Osun Babes at the Sapele Township stadium on Thursday.

The one-sided first half ended without a goal as The Jewel of Rivers missed early opportunities and failed to capitalize on their control of the clash.

In the second half, Rivers Angels continued to exert a great deal of pressure and it paid off as centre referee awarded them a penalty which Blessing Okpe converted the spot kick to earn her side victory.

Regina Akaraonye, Rivers Angels assistant coach, praised her team’s players for their persistent endeavors considering the terrible condition of the field of play.

She emphasized that although the eight-time Federation Cup champions did not have an easy game, both teams gave it their all.

She praised the girls for performing well given the unfriendly pitch conditions.

“I commend their effort in not minding the bad pitch and grinding out a win today.” – she said.

Regina Akaraonye pointed out that the competition is growing tougher as they go along, and she would always remind the girls that in order to advance to the final after making it beyond rounds of 32 and 16, they must build on each victory.

“We will go back to work on the lapses we discovered today ahead of the next round of the competition. We will equally continue to encourage the girls so they can keep giving their best during crucial games like this,” she said.

The Competition committee will perform the draws for the last eight, and Rivers Angels will then be informed of their up-coming opponent.
