Daniel Ogunmodede, head coach of Remo Stars, has voiced his concerns about the inadequate and poor salaries for coaches in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
During a live appearance on Brila FM, Ogunmodede expressed his disappointment over salaries that fall below one million naira, stressing that such financial constraints make it challenging to attract and retain quality coaches in the league, Footballrover reports.
Ogunmodede, who has led Remo Stars since 2022 and guided the team to two consecutive second-place finishes, highlighted the return of Finidi George as the new coach of Rivers United as a positive development.
He expressed joy over George’s appointment and explained the importance of more Nigerian ex-players taking up coaching roles in the NPFL.
He pointed out that it can contribute to raising the standard of football in the league.
He said that having them there will increase healthy competition, player quality, and football in the league and, consequently, the national team.
However, his biggest concern was the current state of coaching salaries in the NPFL.
He stressed that the financial challenges within the NPFL deter many ex-players from pursuing coaching careers.
“The money is not encouraging. The money is extremely not encouraging,” Ogunmodede lamented.
He emphasised the disparity in salaries between Nigerian coaches and their counterparts in other African leagues, making it difficult for ex-players to return as coaches.
He noted that coaches in Rwanda earn between $10,000 and $15,000, whereas Nigerian coaches often earn less than $1,000 per month.
“Rwanda coaches are paid $10,000, $15,000 and we are here paying less than a million Naira. Yet you go for matches and everyone wants money from…”

The former Crown FC coach implied the difficulty coaches face in such a situation, stating that these coaches are even expected to financially support others even at their own low salary.
“This is a coach that goes to a match venue; everybody wants money from him,” he said.
