Remo Stars’ dominance at the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League suffered a setback on Wednesday as relegation-threatened Nasarawa United pulled off a stunning upset in Lafia.
But the biggest surprise came after the match when Remo Stars coach Daniel Ogunmomode openly admitted his side lacked creativity and confessed he was “still surprised” by Nasarawa United’s lowly position on the table, Footballrover reports.
So, how did the underdogs snatch this crucial victory, and what went wrong for the league leaders?
Anas Yusuf’s strike sinks the league leaders
Nasarawa United needed just one moment of brilliance to claim all three points against Remo Stars.
And it came in the 25th minute, when left-back Mubarak Hussaini delivered a dangerous cross into the box, perfectly finding the league’s top scorer, Anas Yusuf.
The in-form forward calmly slotted the ball into an empty net, securing his 14th goal of the season.
Despite mounting pressure from the visitors, the Solid Miners held firm, defending their narrow lead until the final whistle.
The victory marked a huge statement from Nasarawa United, who are battling to escape the relegation zone.
Remo Stars coach left searching for answers
The defeat was a bitter pill to swallow for the Sky Blue Stars, who suffered their seventh loss of the season. The setback also trimmed their lead at the top from 10 points to nine.
Speaking after the game, coach Daniel Ogunmomode admitted his team struggled to create chances and conceded that their opponents fully deserved the win.
“We did our best in the game today, but the outcome wasn’t good enough for us. Nasarawa United needed the points more than us.
They played very well today, and I am still surprised to see them where they are on the league table. They gave their best and got what they worked for. We didn’t create so many chances; I think they deserved the win,” Coach Daniel Ogunmomode said.
