Remo Stars goalkeeper, Bankole Kayode, has expressed deep sorrow over their CAF Champions League defeat, describing their early exit as a painful experience.
In a gripping encounter, Ghanaian team Medeama triumphed over Remo Stars in a penalty shootout, securing their place in the next round of the CAF Champions League.
Medeama took the lead in the first-leg game in Ghana, with a narrow 1-0 victory over the Nigerian side.
However, Remo Stars fought back valiantly, managing to match the scoreline in the return fixture during the preliminary round of the tournament.
The intense competition ultimately led both teams to a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, determining the path to the next phase of Africa’s premier club championship.
In a tense showdown at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State, Medeama emerged as victors with a 3-2 win in the penalty shootout, effectively silencing the passionate home crowd on a Sunday evening.
The spotlight was on Medeama’s goalkeeper, Felix Kyei, who went from being the cause of an own-goal due to a corner in the second half, allowing Remo Stars a 1-0 second-leg victory.
Yet, Kyei redeemed himself magnificently by saving three crucial penalty kicks during the shootout, causing heartbreak for the Nigerian supporters.
The decisive moment came when Jonathan Sowah, from Medeama, confidently converted his penalty kick, ultimately propelling his team forward to the next stage of the competition.
Remo Stars wasn’t the only NPFL side that saw their journey cut short, Enyimba, two-time champions from Nigeria, was eliminated at the same time.
Expressing his deep disappointment over the premature departure, Remo Stars’ goalkeeper, Bankole Kayode, took to his Twitter page to share his thoughts:
“It was so painful loosing on Penalty shootout in the CAF Champions league, thanks to all the fans that came to support us. We will keep pushing. love you all.”
