Odion Ighalo finally found his scoring touch again, delivering a crucial goal that powered Al Wehda to a 3-1 home victory over Al Raed on Thursday evening.
The 35-year-old striker had endured a frustrating 9-game goal drought, spanning 49 days, but he silenced his critics in style at the King Abdul Aziz Stadium, Footballrover reports.
Ighalo’s strike not only helped his side secure their 4th win of the season but also reignited hope in their battle against relegation.
The victory came at a perfect time, ending a poor run of form that saw Al Wehda struggle for results.
Al Wehda entered the match following a goalless draw against Al Fayha in their previous outing but have now returned to winning ways.
Before that, they endured a rough patch with five consecutive defeats, a draw, and two back-to-back losses, leaving their morale at an all-time low.
However, the Nigerian star once again proved instrumental in leading them to victory.
Odion Ighalo rescues Al Wehda after early setback
The match began on a sour note for Al Wehda as Karim El Berkaoui handed Al Raed an early lead in the 16th minute.
However, the hosts refused to crumble under pressure, responding just eight minutes later when Saad Bguir found the equaliser.
With both teams locked at 1-1 heading into halftime, the tension was palpable. But when the second half resumed, Odion Ighalo stepped up when it mattered most.
The Nigerian forward struck in style to put Al Wehda ahead, marking his 5th league goal of the season and bringing an end to his lengthy goal drought.
Just as Al Raed pushed for an equaliser, Alexandru Crețu landed the final blow, securing a much-needed three points for Al Wehda.
Relegation fight continues despite vital win
While the victory provides a morale boost, Al Wehda remains deeply rooted in the relegation zone.
With just 17 points from 24 games, they sit at the bottom of the Saudi Pro League, trailing Al Raed—who occupy 16th place—by a single point.
With only 10 matches left in the season, Odion Ighalo and his teammates will need to build on this momentum as they prepare to face Al Khaleej in matchday 25.
Meanwhile, Ighalo was named Man of the Match for his decisive performance.
The former Manchester United striker recently reflected on his football journey and faith during an interview on Rasheedat Ajibade’s Rash4Christ podcast, revealing how he sacrificed a pay cut to fulfill his dream of playing in the Premier League.
Ighalo also shared how he has been consistent in paying his tithe since 2005, emphasizing his deep-rooted faith.
