Mauricio Pochettino has delivered a scathing assessment of Chelsea performance, stating that they don’t deserve to play in any European competition if they continue to play like they did in their 5-0 loss to Arsenal on Tuesday.
The defeat leaves Chelsea ninth in the Premier League table, three points adrift of seventh-placed Manchester United with six games remaining, Footballrover reports.
Pochettino’s side was humbled by Arsenal, with Leandro Trossard opening the scoring in the fourth minute, followed by braces from Ben White and Kai Havertz in the second half.
The Chelsea manager admitted that his team’s performance was unacceptable.
He highlighted the inconsistency of Chelsea’s play, comparing their strong display against City with their lacklustre performance against Arsenal, saying,
“If we compete like we did against City, it’s okay, but if we compete like today, we don’t deserve to go to Europe.”
The 5-0 defeat was Chelsea’s heaviest since February 2019, and Pochettino acknowledged that the team’s performance was disappointing but refused to use the word “embarrassing” to describe his players.
He claimed that such a term would be unfair given their overall efforts.
However, he emphasised that the team needs to take decisions if they want to be in a different position next season.
Should Chelsea fail to qualify for a European competition, it will be the first time since the mid-1990s that the club has not competed in continental football over two successive seasons.
