The Premier League served up a delicious five-goal feast on Saturday lunchtime, with Nigerians stealing the show as Luton Town and Chelsea played out a dramatic 3-2 encounter at Kenilworth Road.
Adding spice to the clash were two Nigerian forwards, Elijah Adebayo and Noni Madueke, who found themselves on opposite sides of the scoresheet, Footballrover reports.
Adebayo, who is eligible to play for both Nigeria and England, was threatened throughout the match, even having a goal chalked off for offside by VAR early on.
He finally got his reward in the 87th minute, pouncing on a loose ball in the box after a good save from Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.
His strike set up a tense finale, with Luton desperately pushing for an equalizer.
The forward has managed to score against Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea this season.
However, it was Madueke, the English-born youngster of Nigerian descent, who stole the show for Chelsea.
He first doubled the Blues’ lead just before halftime, finishing off a clinical counter-attack, and the Blues put the game seemingly beyond doubt with another goal in the 79th minute.
Adebayo’s goal, however, sparked a Luton revival. Just a minute after Chelsea’s third, former Chelsea youth player Ross Barkley pulled one back with a well-placed header.
The Hatters were then unlucky not to equalise when Adebayo’s header rattled the crossbar.
Chelsea, despite not playing at their best, held on for the win, taking home all three points from Bedfordshire.
The result extends their lead over Luton to 12 points, while Adebayo and Madueke’s contrasting performances leave both players with plenty to ponder as they head into the new year.
Nigerian Flair Lights Up Kenilworth Road:
Adebayo’s goal, his fifth of the Premier League season, shows his growing confidence and predatory instincts.
He could easily have had more on the day, showcasing his threat to any defence.
Madueke’s goal, on the other hand, was a reminder of his immense talent.
The 20-year-old’s pace and skill were a constant menace for Luton, and his stunning strike was a clinical finish worthy of a player tipped for great things.
Talking Points:
- Can Luton maintain their recent good form and push for a higher finish in the league?
- Will Chelsea learn from their shaky performance and rediscover their early-season dominance?
- Will either Adebayo or Madueke earn a call-up to the Nigerian national team in the near future?
Six added minutes at least here.
