In a recent revelation, Coach Mauricio Pochettino has shed light on why he often finds himself laughing at Chelsea fans’ criticisms, emphasising that “all the data” points to his team deserving a higher spot in the Premier League standings.
Despite being positioned at a disappointing 11th place in the league table, a significant 17 points adrift from fourth-placed Aston Villa, Chelsea’s hope for silverware lies solely in the FA Cup, Footballrover reports.
However, their journey faces a formidable challenge against holders Manchester City in the upcoming semi-finals.
Analysing the statistics, Chelsea ranks impressively fourth for expected goal difference per game, yet their actual goal difference remains marginal.
Pochettino highlighted the discrepancy between the team’s performance metrics and their current league position, highlighting areas where Chelsea falls short.
Before the Blues edged out the Championship side Leicester City 4-2 thanks to two goals in stoppage time, a segment of the crowd sang, “You don’t know what you’re doing.”
In previous home games, fans have also been heard chanting the names of former owners Roman Abramovich and manager Jose Mourinho.
In his response, Pochettino said:
“We know really well what we’re doing; that’s why I laugh when the fans say, You don’t know what you’re doing. We’re going to be strong; we want to be successful here.”
Responding to fans’ discontent and accusations of mismanagement since Todd Boehly’s Clearlake Capital assumed ownership, Pochettino defends the club’s strategies.
He maintains confidence in the project, asserting that the team is committed to success despite the transitional phase.
“We are always calm and relaxed about the project, and we know it is a new one. “Fans need to understand that it’s a new project with different ideas, he said.
Addressing concerns about the new ownership’s approach, the 52-year-old gaffer voices support for the investment and acknowledges the challenges inherited by the current regime.
He stresses the need for fans to grasp the evolving nature of the club’s vision and objectives.
While acknowledging fans’ frustrations, Pochettino empathises with the owners’ plight, emphasising their commitment to the club’s progress.
“They are suffering,” he lamented.
He refutes claims of lack of investment or malicious intent, urging supporters to trust the process and embrace the journey towards a revitalised Chelsea.
