FC Basel secured a dominant 4-1 victory over FC Sion in the Swiss Super League on Sunday, with Nigerian forwards Kevin Carlos and Phillip Otele both scoring crucial goals.
On matchday 20 of the Swiss Super League, Omoruyi netted the second goal, while 25-year-old Phillip Otele came off the bench to score on his debut in FC Basel’s commanding home win over Sion, Footballrover reports.
The win saw Basel bounce back from a 2-2 draw against league leaders Lugano, closing the gap at the top of the table.
Kevin Carlos and Phillip Otele lead FC Basel’s attack
FC Sion initially took the lead in the 20th minute through Theo Berdayes. However, Basel responded quickly, with Dominik Robin Schmid equalising just before halftime in the 43rd minute.
In the second half, Kevin Carlos put Basel ahead in the 53rd minute, before Joe Mendes extended their advantage with a goal in the 66th minute.
Phillip Otele, who had come on as a substitute, sealed the win with his first goal for Basel in the 76th minute, securing a commanding 4-1 scoreline.
Otele, who joined on loan from Al Wahda with option to buy for €3m plus sell-on clause, made an immediate impact in his debut match, while Carlos extended his impressive tally to eight goals for the season.
Basel continues their charge towards top spot
Despite being reduced to 10 men after Albian Ajeti received a red card in additional time, FC Basel comfortably held onto their lead as their visitor proved to be no match to their strength.
The victory moves them to second place in the Swiss Super League standings, just one point behind leaders Lugano.
With the momentum from this commanding performance, Basel will look to keep up the pressure as they prepare for their next fixture against Zurich.
