The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has issued a stern ultimatum to Jose Peseiro, urging him to either embrace a pay cut or step down from his position as head coach of the Super Eagles.
The ultimatum comes as the NFF aims to navigate financial challenges while ensuring the team’s continued success.
The Portuguese coach is currently earning around 70,000USD per month according to his contract, which ended in June 2023.
Sheriff Rabiu Inuwa, the Chairman of the NFF Technical Committee, shed light on the situation, stating,
“The Technical Committee has given him [Peseiro] three days to respond to our proposed pay cut or we disengage him finally. We will allow him to continue if he accepts a reduction in his 70,000 USD monthly salary and other conditions of service.”
The NFF’s decision hinges on a critical juncture – whether Peseiro accepts the scaled-down terms or parts ways with the prestigious coaching position.
“We are committed to enabling him to remain at the helm should he agree to the revised conditions, which are necessary given the current circumstances,” Inuwa emphasized.
However, if Peseiro opts not to embrace the NFF’s proposition, a swift series of actions will unfold.
“If he turns down our proposal, we will consider appointing a coach to oversee the dead rubber game against Sao Tome and Principe in Uyo, then we start to search for a new substantive coach that the NFF can afford to pay his salary,” Inuwa stated.
Adding an intriguing layer to the narrative is Peseiro’s steadfast stance against the proposed pay cut.
As the deadline looms, will Peseiro heed the NFF’s call for shared sacrifice, or will the Super Eagles find themselves charting a new course with a different leader at the helm?
This chapter in Nigerian football history has sparked a blend of curiosity and apprehension among fans and observers.
Meanwhile, the NFF will be looking to decide who will lead the team against Sao Tome.
Jose Peseiro might honour the game in an intriguing turn of events, according to reliable sources.
Possible replacements include Finidi George, Salisu Yusuf, and Austin Eguaveon.
