Algeria’s move to recruit Vladimir Petkovic as their new national team head coach and Jose Peseiro’s contract expiry announcement with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have sparked a new debate, steered by photojournalist Adepoju Tobi Samuel.
Peseiro points out that the terms and conditions of the contract may be extended, and he is open to NFF negotiations, Footballrover reports.
His flexibility in negotiating terms—which was demonstrated by previous salary reduction—suggests that this could actually go on, but under other terms that would benefit him.
While rumours swirl about the NFF’s inclination towards a domestic coach, possibly tapping Austin Eguaveon temporarily, Tobi Samuel has advocated for a strategic move rather.
And what could that move be?
Extending Peseiro’s contract to cover key events like the 2025 AFCON qualifiers and the 2026 FIFA World Cup could provide stability and mutual respect.
However, Tobi warns of the need for performance-based termination clauses to safeguard all parties from undue compensation.
He explained that, if the NFF leans towards a domestic coach, adequate support in the form of a well-structured technical bench becomes paramount.
The accredited FIFA and CAF photojournalist also highlighted past deficiencies, like Eguaveon’s 2021 AFCON stint without professional assistance, and emphasised the need for diverse skills among backroom staff.
Tobi, however, cautioned against the pitfalls of appointing domestic coaches solely based on playing experience, urging the NFF to recognise the multifaceted requirements of coaching roles.
