Former Rivers United midfielder Morice Chukwu has put all rumours of a potential NPFL return to rest, making it clear that his sights are now firmly set on his international football journey.

The 23-year-old spoke exclusively to Grassroot Legends Media after a preseason clash between Port Harcourt Professionals and their Aba counterparts at the Sharks Stadium—a game that ended in a 2-2 draw after the Aba side came from two goals down, Footballrover reports.
“I’ve Moved On from NPFL”—Morice Chukwu Opens Up
When asked how life has been since leaving the Nigeria Premier Football League, Morice didn’t mince words:

— “I’m very happy, because we need to move; we know what we are fighting for. So, I’m very happy to leave the NPFL and face another challenge.”
While the defensive midfielder admitted he misses his time in Nigeria’s top flight, he emphasised the importance of growth:
— “I miss NPFL, but you know, this our career; you can’t stay in one place, so you have to play to make a name.”
Having played a key role at Rivers United—where he won the league title after joining from Akwa United in 2021—Chukwu’s exit came shortly after his contract expired.

Why NPFL Return Is Not in Morice’s Plans
Although fans may hope for a comeback, but Morice Chukwu has firmly shut the door on any NPFL return, at least as an active player.
— “Yeah! I miss Rivers United because before I left there, I made my name.”

But when asked directly if he would consider returning someday, he gave a clear, career-focused response:
— “Maybe if I want to return, I will make sure I’ve ended my career abroad, because I cannot come to the Nigerian league again.”
Pressed further on why he ruled it out, he simply said:
— “I cannot come back because I know my reason and have my reasons for staying outside the country. Maybe whenever I want to return here (NPFL), I know I want to retire from football.”
Since departing Nigeria, Morice Chukwu has been plying his trade with Tanzania Premier League side Fountain Gate FC—a club that was later rebranded to Singida Fountain Gate FC following a new acquisition.

His journey took another turn when he was loaned out to Tabora United, before reuniting with his parent club ahead of the new season.
At just 23, he is now aiming to solidify his name across African football and beyond.
