Lobi Stars head coach Eugene Agagbe couldn’t hide his pride after his team’s gritty performance, despite settling for a goalless draw against Akwa United during their first league game of the season.
The Lobi coach praised their display of character in a hard-fought encounter that saw them share the spoils against Akwa United at the Lafia City Stadium on Monday, Footballrover reports.
Reflecting on the game, Agagbe expressed his frustration at the result, admitting Lobi Stars were unlucky not to have claimed all three points.
The Makurdi-based side kicked off their 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League campaign with a 0-0 draw, despite dominating much of the action against the Promise Keepers.
The Pride of Benue were the better side for most of the match, but a lack of clinical finishing let them down.
From the very beginning, they pressed the Akwa Boys, with their first clear chance arriving in the 25th minute.
Waheed Adebayo delivered a precise pass to Stanley Oganbor, putting him in a dangerous position, but the shot sailed just wide.
The first half ended scoreless, but Lobi Stars didn’t back down. In the second half, they pushed even harder, determined to find the breakthrough.

Ahmadu Liman almost stole the show in the 50th minute with a cracking strike, brilliantly set up by Suur Kumaga.
However, Akwa United’s goalkeeper stood firm, keeping the scoreline intact.
Chance after chance went begging for Lobi Stars as they failed to convert their dominance into goals.

By the final whistle, the score remained 0-0, leaving Agagbe disappointed yet optimistic.
“My boys played with character, but luck escaped them. We hope to do better in our subsequent games,” Agagbe said during his post-match interview.
Lobi Stars now turn their attention to yet another early-season test against former champions Enyimba International as they head to Aba for what promises to be a thrilling encounter.
