Kwara United Football Club Chairman Kumbi Titiloye has revealed why the team had to struggle during the 2023–24 NPFL season as they officially announce their end-of-season break, signalling early preparations for the upcoming 2024–2025 campaign.
The announcement was made by the club’s general manager, Bashir Badawiy, who indicated that players and officials would soon receive communication regarding the resumption date, following consultations with management, Footballrover reports.
In their final match of the 2023–2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, Kwara United clinched a decisive 4-0 victory over Heartland FC, securing a 13th-place finish overall.
Throughout the season, the team displayed a competitive spirit, winning 12 out of 38 matches, drawing 15, and losing 11. They netted a total of 38 goals while conceding 37.
Reflecting on the season, club chairman Kumbi Titiloye attributed the team’s challenges to several factors.
“We started preparations relatively late this past season, and adjusting to natural grass pitches after becoming accustomed to synthetic surfaces, especially at home, posed additional hurdles,” Titiloye explained.
Despite their league performance, Kwara United’s journey in the President Federation Cup ended in a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to eventual finalists Abia Warriors during the Round of 16, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
On a brighter note, the club secured the State Federation Cup title after triumphing over local rivals Abubakar Bukola Saraki FC, setting the stage for their national final appearance.
Chairman Titiloye emphasised that lessons from the season would guide immediate preparations for the upcoming NPFL campaign.
“We’ve identified key areas for improvement and are committed to starting our preparations earlier to ensure a more competitive performance next season,” he stated.
The club extended gratitude to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his support throughout the season.
They also expressed appreciation to the Kwara State Sports Commission, Kwara FA, Kwara Referees, SWAN, supporters, fans, and all stakeholders for their continued support and understanding.
