In November 2023, Heartland FC managerial structure saw a dramatic change following the appointment of Kennedy Boboye as the new head coach—a departure from Christian Obi, who had left Heartland FC winless and relegated to the bottom of the league standings.
This marked the first managerial change of the season in NPFL. Boboye’s impact was immediate and impressive, Footballrover reports.
Within a short span, he secured 10 points out of a possible 20, propelling Heartland out of the relegation zone.
His tenure included three clean sheets and a draw against Shooting Stars in Ibadan, making him only the third manager to halt 3SC’s winning streak at Lekan Salami Stadium.
He went on to lead Heartland to a victory over the then-league leaders, Remo Stars, in Owerri.
However, despite this resurgence, an unexpected directive came from Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, ordering Boboye’s dismissal and the reinstatement of Christian Obi.
The Imo State FA complied, resulting in what many considered the most baffling decision of the season in the Nigerian league.
Boboye’s managerial skills did not go unnoticed for long. At the start of 2024, he was appointed as the manager of Sunshine Stars.
At the time of his appointment, Sunshine Stars were struggling, positioned 13th on the league table and just two points above the relegation zone.
Under Boboye’s leadership, the team experienced a remarkable turnaround, and with over 20 games, he achieved 10 wins and 6 draws, amassing 36 points out of a possible 60.
A recent away win against Doma United secured Sunshine Stars’ place in the league for the next season.
The team is currently on a six-game unbeaten streak, the longest active run in the league, and sits 10th on the table, four points clear of relegation with one game remaining.
Kennedy Boboye doesn't get enough credit. Appointed in February, he has taken the Akure side from 15th to 10th place.
With only 5 losses since his appointment, Sunshine Stars are currently unbeaten in their last 6 games, boasting the best form in the league right now.#NPFL24 pic.twitter.com/KHlbloVQRJ

The decision to let go of Boboye remains perplexing, especially as Heartland, under Christian Obi, now faces relegation.
Boboye’s credentials are undeniable—he is the only manager to have won the Nigerian League title twice with two different clubs, Plateau United and Akwa United.
Kennedy Boboye’s story shows that true competence and class can remain intact in the face of controversy and sudden changes.
His recent achievement with Sunshine Stars shows that he remains one of the league’s finest managers.
