Kelechi Iheanacho has broken his silence ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, expressing a mix of anticipation and determination.
Reflecting on the Super Eagles’ recent setbacks, the forward shared his belief in the team’s ability to turn their fortunes around, Footballrover reports.
The striker is determined to inspire his teammates to overcome past setbacks and start strong in their journey to secure a World Cup berth.
But with Nigeria trailing in their group and facing a familiar rival, can they rise to the challenge?
Super Eagles aim to rewrite history in World Cup qualifiers
The Super Eagles face a formidable challenge in their opening match against Rwanda, a team that recently stunned Nigeria with a 2-1 victory during the AFCON qualifiers.
Despite already securing their place in the 2025 AFCON, the loss exposed weaknesses that the team cannot afford to repeat.
Nigeria has yet to defeat the Amavubi, recording a frustrating draw in Kigali and a disappointing loss at home.
Reflecting on these hurdles, Iheanacho, who spoke to Victor Modo, emphasised the need for a renewed sense of urgency.
“We must go with red eyes and win all these games. This is World Cup qualifier, and we know how big it is. And now we have how many draws? They are the ones ahead in the World Cup qualifiers, and they are down here,” he said.
Nigeria’s position in the qualifying group adds to the pressure. With just three points and a string of draws, the Super Eagles find themselves second from the bottom.
Yet Iheanacho remains optimistic. He believes the team has what it takes to overturn their fortunes and silence the doubts surrounding their campaign.
“I can’t wait for it to start so that we just go there and do this thing so everyone will rest and not shake that we won’t go to the World Cup,” the forward added.
The Super Eagles’ first step comes next year in their clash with Rwanda.
A victory would not only set a confident tone for the qualifiers but also signal the beginning of Nigeria’s resurgence in the qualifying series.
