Joy Omewa has been a bright spot for Fortuna Hjorring since last season, and she proved that once again when they faced Hibernian in the single-leg UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifiers on Wednesday.
Omewa found the back of the net to help the Danish side secure a hard-fought home win over their counterparts from Scotland, Footballrover reports.
Joy Omewa Equaliser Sparks Fortuna Hjorring Comeback
The 22-year-old striker scored the equaliser that pulled her team back into the game as they came from behind to snatch a 2-1 win at the Stelios Kyriakides Stadium.
Omewa has now scored in back-to-back games for Fortuna Hjorring, following her brace in the 4-0 win over Aarhus Women in their last outing in the Danish A-Liga Women.
The Super Falcons prospect has registered three goals in three matches so far, proving her worth once again in crucial games.
It was a night of swings, spills, and heartbreak for Hibernian, as Fortuna sealed the victory with a stoppage-time winner in a fiercely contested clash.
Hibernian Missed Chances, Fortuna Found Magic
The drama started early. Inside four minutes, Kathleen McGovern had the perfect chance to put Hibs ahead from the penalty spot but dragged her effort wide.
Fortuna responded immediately, with Omewa also missing her own penalty just three minutes later in what felt like a chaotic, anything-goes opening spell.
After the interval, The Cabbage struck first. Rachael Boyle’s smart finish in the 47th minute gave the visitors a deserved lead and a platform to control the game.
But Fortuna clawed back, Omewa making amends for her early miss with a tidy equaliser in the 70th minute.
Just as it looked destined for extra time, Fortuna found their moment of magic.
Deep into the 90th minute, Nikoline Lilly Nielsen popped up with the decisive strike, sparking wild celebrations from the home crowd and leaving Hibs floored at the death.
Fortuna took the spoils, while The Hibees were left with only what-ifs.
