Rivers United maintained their lead in the Nigeria Professional Football League with a 2-1 victory over Dakkada FC at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Wednesday, thanks to a brace from Ishaq Kayode Rafiu.
In the 33rd minute, Ishaq Kayode scored for the “Pride of Rivers” when he sprinted through to slide home a feed from Chijioke Akuneto.
Emmanuel Ayaosi equalised for the visitors against the course of play with a stunning strike from outside the box that reached the back of the net.
In the 61st minute,Β Ishaq Kayode scored his second and ninth goals of the season, converting from the penalty spot after a Dakkada FC defender was penalised for ball handling.
The Wike Boys deserved their victory, and Technical Manager Stanley Eguma did not mince his remarks in the post-match press conference.
“It was a good game, 3 points in the bag. I also commend our opponent. They also played good football. The tried to create an upset today but our players lived up to expectation. Actually it was a difficult game, a little of fatigue on my team and it affected our goal rush early in the game. So I commend their effort.”
The win put Rivers United two points ahead of Remo Stars in second place, and four points ahead of Plateau United in third place in the NPFL standings.
Plateau United will host Rivers United at Jos on Sunday, February 6th, 2022.
