For the third time this season, Rivers United have allowed a strong position in a match to slip through their fingers, raising serious questions about the team’s defensive focus and mental strength.
On Sunday at the Umuahia Township Stadium, the former NPFL champions looked set to claim all three points against Abia Warriors after Maclyn Biokpo struck a late opener in the 87th minute, Footballrover reports.
Rivers United’s Mental Fragility Exposed Yet Again
But deep into stoppage time, Suraj Lawal’s equaliser snatched a draw from under their noses, leaving head coach Finidi George visibly disappointed.
It is a troubling pattern that stretches beyond the domestic league. Earlier in the CAF Champions League, the Pride of Rivers had suffered a similar fate against RS Berkane, conceding twice in stoppage time despite holding a lead.
Following that match, Finidi openly criticised the team’s inability to manage the closing moments, describing the lapses as a failure in concentration rather than physical exhaustion.
Speaking after the latest draw in Umuahia, the Rivers United coach reiterated his frustration, emphasising the mental aspect of game management.
“It’s just concentration; we need to get the players stronger mentally to be able to manage games when the match is almost over,” Finidi said in his post-match conference.
“It’s not a physical thing about managing games; it’s just unfortunate how the goal was conceded. We came to Umuahia not to lose or maybe the players were not even sure if we can get a victory from this game, but overall it’s a sad one,” he added.
A Pattern Too Costly to Ignore
For a team that has consistently shown quality and dominance over opponents, these late-game collapses are more than minor setbacks—they are costly lessons in the fine margins of football.
In both the NPFL and continental competition, Rivers United had been fully in control, yet defensive lapses at crucial moments have repeatedly turned potential victories into draws or defeats.
Finidi’s assessment is clear: the team’s focus needs reinforcement in the final minutes of play.
Finding Solutions Without Losing Sight of Positives
While the coach acknowledged the squad’s overall quality, he remains candid about the areas for improvement.
Tactical adjustments, substitutions, or striker limitations cannot fully compensate for mental lapses when the match hangs in the balance.
Rivers United will now turn their attention to another away NPFL fixture against Plateau United on Wednesday before hosting Wikki Tourist on Sunday.
If they are to convert strong performances into tangible results, strengthening focus and composure in the final stages of matches will be non-negotiable.
