When Esther Okoronkwo first kicked a ball in the dusty streets of Abia, Nigeria, she wasn’t thinking about World Cups or trophies.

She just wanted to keep up with her older brother and his friends. What started as sibling rivalry soon became an unstoppable passion that carried her from backyard games to the biggest stage in women’s football, Footballrover reports.

From Abia Streets to Super Falcons Breakthrough

For Okoronkwo, football never looked like a career at first. Growing up, women’s soccer lacked recognition and financial security.

“I didn’t think I’d go professional,” the 26-year-old told CBC Sports. “Back then, women’s football wasn’t seen the way it is today. But I knew I was good.”

Her story truly began to take shape when she moved to Texas as a teenager. After high school, she played at Northeast Texas Community College before moving to Lamar University.

But in 2018, just as her career was gathering pace, she suffered a torn ACL — a devastating blow that kept her out for almost a year.

“It was bad, and painful. It took me nine to 11 months to fully recover,” Okoronkwo recalled. “But I wanted to get back.”

Once fit, Okoronkwo trained with NWSL side Houston Dash, chasing her first professional contract.

Opportunity knocked when Nigeria faced last-minute visa issues during the 2021 WNT Summer Series in Texas. Called into the Super Falcons squad, Okoronkwo seized her chance.

A brief debut against Jamaica was enough to attract interest from France, where she signed for AS Saint-Étienne in the top division.

But soon after, heartbreak struck again. A second ACL tear in her other knee cut her first professional season short and dashed her AFCON 2022 hopes.

“I didn’t even get to enjoy my season,” she said. “In my head, I’m like, ‘No, I can’t … my professional career can’t be like this,” she noted.

Okoronkwo stunned doctors with her rapid six-month recovery, but it came too late for her to feature at the tournament.

“He Was the Key”: Okoronkwo’s Praise for Randy Waldrum

After short stints in Spain and China, Okoronkwo’s resilience kept her career alive. Crucially, Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum stayed in touch, continuing to call her up even when she was still regaining form and fitness.

“I give all credit to Randy,” she said. “He was the key factor for me. He took a huge chance on me, even when I was recovering from a big injury.”

For Okoronkwo, that trust became motivation. “That made me think about the opportunity and how I’m going to take it to do the best I can. I didn’t want regrets. That’s what pushed me.”

Her journey from the streets of Abia to the Super Falcons shows more than talent — it’s a story of perseverance, faith, and the mentor who believed in her.
